THEME: Listen and Hear
Prepare the Way – be peacemakers!
Take a moment to consciously step into this new season of Advent. What are you hoping for this season?
The exhortation to “prepare the way of the Lord” echoed in the ears of God’s people through the centuries and stands centre stage in today’s readings from Malachi and Luke.
Despite these urgings and warnings, the world was taken by surprise on the day that Christ appeared.
John the Baptist was sent as a herald and a messenger to prepare for the Lord’s coming, and the Holy Spirit prepares a place in our hearts for the appearance of God’s love and presence in our lives.
The passage from Philippians assures us that whether we’re ready or not, the one who started this amazing work will surely bring it to completion in each of us “for the glory and praise of God.”
Malachi 3:1-4
Malachi 3:1-4 is a powerful passage that speaks to the coming of a holy messenger who will prepare the way for the Lord. This message is both a promise and a warning, emphasizing purification and refinement. Here are the main points and how we can apply them in our lives, especially during Advent with its theme of peace:
Main Points:
The Coming Messenger: Malachi announces that a messenger will come to prepare the way for the Lord. This figure is often interpreted as John the Baptist in the Christian tradition.
Purification and Refinement: The passage uses metaphors like a refiner’s fire and fuller’s soap to describe the process of purification that the people will undergo. This purification is necessary for them to offer righteous worship to God.
Judgment and Renewal: The coming of the Lord will bring judgment, but its purpose is to renew and restore the people to a state of holiness.
Application in Our Lives
Prepare for the Lord: Just as the messenger prepares the way, we are called to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. This involves self-reflection and repentance, making room for God’s presence in our lives.
Embrace Refinement: The process of purification can be uncomfortable, but it is essential for spiritual growth. We should welcome God’s refining work in our lives, allowing Him to cleanse us from impurities and make us more like Christ.
Seek Peace: Advent is a time of waiting and preparation for the Prince of Peace. Amidst the busyness and noise of life, we should seek moments of stillness to hear God’s voice and respond to His calling. This peace is not just the absence of conflict but a deep sense of well-being and alignment with God’s will.
Incorporating the Advent Theme of Peace
Advent reminds us of the peace that Christ brings. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to miss God’s voice. Here are some ways to incorporate peace into our Advent journey:
Create Quiet Spaces: Set aside time each day for quiet reflection and prayer. This helps us tune out the noise and focus on God’s presence.
Practice Mindfulness: Be mindful of God’s presence in every moment. This can be through simple practices like deep breathing, meditative reading of Scripture, or listening to peaceful music.
Actively Listen: Make a conscious effort to listen for God’s voice in your daily activities. This could be through reading the Bible, listening to sermons, or simply being attentive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
By focusing on these practices, we can better prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ and experience the true peace that He offers.
Philippians 1:1-11
Main Points:
Partnership in the Gospel: Paul expresses gratitude for the Philippians’ partnership in spreading the Gospel.
Confidence in God’s Work: Paul is confident that God, who began a good work in them, will carry it to completion.
Prayer for Growth: Paul prays for their love to abound more in knowledge and depth of insight.
Application:
Listen and Grow: Engage in community and support each other in faith, listening to God’s guidance.
Prepare for Completion: Trust that God is working in you and will bring His work to completion.
Proclaim Love: Let your love grow in knowledge and insight, sharing it with others.
Luke 3:1-6
Main Points:
Historical Context: Luke sets the scene with a list of rulers, emphasising the political and religious context.
John the Baptist’s Role: John preaches a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, preparing the way for Jesus.
Fulfillment of Prophecy: John’s ministry fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy about preparing the way for the Lord.
Application:
Listen to the Call: Be attentive to God’s call for repentance and transformation in your life.
Prepare the Way: Actively prepare your heart for Christ’s coming through repentance and forgiveness.
Proclaim the Good News: Share the message of repentance and forgiveness with others, helping them prepare for Christ.
Incorporating Advent Themes
Peace: Create quiet spaces in your daily routine to experience God’s peace and listen to His voice.
Listen: Be mindful of God’s presence and guidance in your life, especially during busy times.
Prepare: Reflect on your spiritual journey and make necessary changes to welcome Christ.
Proclaim: Share the hope and peace of Advent with others, encouraging them to prepare for Christ’s coming.
By focusing on these themes and applying the lessons from these passages, we can better prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ and experience the true peace that Advent offers.
