SERMON – Second Sunday in Lent – C

SERMON – Second Sunday in Lent – C

These readings for the second Sunday in Lent are deeply interconnected by themes of faith, covenant, promise, and perseverance in the face of challenges. Together, they invite us to trust God’s promises, reflect on the journey of faith, and act with courage and purpose in our own lives.

This week’s readings draw together a mix of comforting promises and stark realities. On one side, we hear about God’s mercy and protection. Abraham is reassured with a covenant promise—countless descendants and a future filled with hope. Paul, writing to the Philippians, reminds us that those who stay faithful aren’t on a path to ruin but are destined for glory. But then the Gospel reading brings a reality check. It shows Jesus facing persecution as he follows God’s call. What stands out is his unwavering courage—he won’t back down in the face of threats, and he stays focused on his mission, even though he knows suffering lies ahead. His determination echoes the challenges faced by prophets before him. These readings remind us of something important: being close to God doesn’t mean life will be easy or free from struggles. God’s protection isn’t about avoiding harm altogether. Instead, it’s about the strength and hope God gives us to stay faithful and keep going, no matter what. At the end of it all, we’re promised glory and transformation. In today’s fast-paced world, choosing the harder, Gospel-centered path can feel out of step. But if we trust God’s promises and lean into this call, we’ll find a life that carries us through tough times and empowers us to thrive in the good ones.
