MESSAGE – Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost – Year B – 29 September 2024

Esther 7:1-6, 7:9-10; 9:20-22 Courage and Divine Justice: In this dramatic story, Queen Esther bravely reveals the wicked plot of Haman, who sought to destroy her people. Her courage leads to Haman’s downfall, as he faces the very fate he intended for others. This passage highlights the power of standing up for justice and the divine intervention that often accompanies acts of bravery. The celebration of Purim is established to remember this deliverance, emphasizing joy and gratitude for God’s protection.

James 5:12-20 Integrity, Patience, and the Power of Prayer: James encourages believers to live with integrity, letting their “yes” be yes and their “no” be no. He calls for patience in suffering, using the example of farmers waiting for their crops and the perseverance of the prophets. The passage underscores the transformative power of prayer, urging the community to pray for one another, confess sins, and seek healing. It’s a reminder that faith in action, through prayer and mutual support, can bring profound change.

Mark 9:38-50 Inclusivity and Vigilance: Jesus teaches his disciples to be inclusive, accepting those who do good in his name, even if they are not part of their immediate group. He emphasises that anyone who is not against them is for them. Additionally, Jesus warns about the seriousness of causing others to stumble in their faith, urging his followers to avoid sin at all costs. This passage calls for a broad-minded, inclusive approach to others while maintaining personal vigilance against sin.
