SERMON – First Sunday in Lent – C

SERMON – First Sunday in Lent – C

As we embark on this journey through Lent, let us take a moment to reflect on its deeper meaning in our lives. Lent is often associated with self-denial and giving up certain pleasures, but it is essential to remember that this season is not about self-denial for its own sake. Instead, it is an opportunity for us to clear space in our lives for what truly matters: love, justice, and grace.

In today’s readings, we are reminded of the importance of stepping into the wilderness of our own lives to confront the temptations that pull us away from these core values. Let’s consider how we can apply these lessons practically in our daily lives. In Deuteronomy, we see the Israelites bringing their first fruits as an offering to God, acknowledging His provision and blessings. This act of gratitude serves as a reminder for us to recognize the abundance in our lives and to give thanks. During this Lenten season, let us focus on cultivating a spirit of gratitude, offering our time, resources, and love to those around us. In Romans, Paul emphasizes that righteousness comes through faith in Christ. This passage reminds us that our relationship with God is not based on our efforts but on our faith and trust in Him. As we journey through Lent, let us deepen our faith and trust in God’s love and grace.

In the Gospel of Luke, we see Jesus being led into the wilderness and confronting the temptations of the devil. Jesus’ time in the wilderness serves as a powerful example for us to follow. He resisted temptation by relying on God’s word and staying true to His mission. Let us use this Lenten season to confront our own temptations and distractions, and to reaffirm our commitment to love, justice, and grace.
