SERMON – Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost – Year B – 17 November 2024

THEME:

How are we to respond when we face the violent upheaval of our world, or when others use mockery to dominate us in personal power plays? What does it mean to trust in God’s grace and protection, to live out the peace and justice of God’s Reign in a world of war and injustice?
The call to peace is always a difficult one to answer, both personally and collectively, but it is a call we must face in worship this week. This peace provides the space for HOPE to WIN.
Today’s pre-Advent readings foreshadow the prophetic warnings and hope that come with the early readings in Advent. Mary’s Magnificat closely mirrors Hannah’s song of praise (1 Samuel 2:1-10). Together, these women celebrate the miracle of life—springing forth and overcoming despair and fear. Hope wins the day, as barrenness is banished, and fertile ground is found (1 Samuel 1).
Hope wins the day, as the hungry are fed with abundance, and the poor are raised up to seats of honour (1 Samuel 2).
Hope wins the day, as sins are forgiven through Christ’s grace (Hebrews 10). Hope wins the day, as Jesus becomes the cornerstone that never fails (Mark 13). Hope is the gift that sustains us through days of darkness and times of waiting.

1 Samuel 1 & 2:1-10

Hannah’s Story:

Context: Hannah’s deep sorrow over her barrenness leads her to fervent prayer. Her faith and persistence are rewarded with the birth of Samuel, whom she dedicates to God.
Application: Hannah’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of hope and faith. In moments of despair, her unwavering hope in God’s goodness brings about a miraculous change. This encourages us to remain hopeful and persistent in our prayers, trusting that God hears and responds to our deepest needs.

Hannah’s Song of Praise:

Content: Hannah’s song (1 Samuel 2:1-10) celebrates God’s ability to reverse fortunes—lifting the lowly, feeding the hungry, and humbling the proud.
Application: This song reminds us that hope is not passive but active, rooted in the belief that God can and will intervene in our lives. It encourages us to look beyond our current circumstances and trust in God’s power to bring about justice and transformation.
Persistent Prayer: Like Hannah, we can make prayer a regular part of our lives, bringing our deepest desires and concerns to God with faith and persistence.
Support Others: Encourage and support those who are struggling with similar issues, offering a listening ear and praying with them.
Celebrate Small Victories: Recognise and celebrate the small victories and blessings in your life, acknowledging God’s hand in them.

Hebrews 10

Christ’s Sacrifice:

Context: This passage emphasizes the new covenant established through Christ’s sacrifice, which offers complete forgiveness and a restored relationship with God.
Application: The hope found in Christ’s sacrifice is foundational for Christians. It assures us that no matter our past, we are forgiven and can start anew. This hope empowers us to live boldly and share the message of grace with others, knowing that our future is secure in Christ.
Embrace Forgiveness: Accept the forgiveness offered through Christ and let go of past guilt. Extend forgiveness to others, fostering reconciliation and peace.
Live Boldly: With the assurance of Christ’s grace, live boldly and confidently, taking steps of faith in your personal and professional life.
Encourage Others: Encourage others to embrace the hope found in Christ, offering support and sharing the message of grace.

Mark 13

Jesus as the Cornerstone:

Context: Jesus speaks about the end times, urging His followers to stay vigilant and hopeful, as He is the cornerstone that will never fail.
Application: In times of uncertainty and fear, this passage encourages us to anchor our hope in Jesus. His unchanging nature and promises provide a solid foundation, enabling us to face challenges with confidence and hope. It reminds us that no matter what happens, Jesus is our steadfast hope.
Stay Vigilant: Stay spiritually vigilant by regularly reading Scripture, praying, and participating in community worship.
