Human beings are not created to live alone, but for connection, community and relationship. Our relationships are not just with one another, but with the God who created us as well. But, all of these relationships are destroyed when we become unfaithful, or we when we allow our commitments to be weakened or broken by life’s turmoil, or by our own hardness of heart. But, when we remain faithful, our relationships become the place where we experience the grace and salvation of God, and where
the Reign of God is dramatically revealed.
Job 1:1; 2:1-10: Themes: The testing of faith, the sovereignty of God, and innocent suffering. Job’s unwavering faith amidst immense suffering highlights the mystery of divine will and the challenge of maintaining faith in adversity. Application: Encourage your congregation to trust in God’s sovereignty even when facing inexplicable hardships. This reveals to us the importance of maintaining faith and integrity, like Job, despite life’s trials.
Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12: Themes: The supremacy of Christ, Christ as God’s ultimate revelation, and the incarnation. These passages affirm Jesus’ divine nature and his role as the perfect mediator between God and humanity. Application: Jesus’ incarnation is significant in showing us how to live the life, ways and commandments of God. This is a great opportunity for us all to deepen our relationship with Christ, recognising him as the ultimate revelation of God’s love and grace.
Mark 10:2-16: Themes: Marriage and divorce, the kingdom of God, and the value of childlike faith. Jesus teaches about the sanctity of marriage and the importance of receiving the kingdom of God with the humility and openness of a child. Application: Commitment in relationships is important and the need for humility and openness in faith. Let us all be encouraged to approach God with a childlike trust and to value and nurture the faith of children within the community.
